Anorexia: Here are some of the common warning signs that indicate that a person may be suffering from anorexia. The person:
Is thin and keeps getting thinner, losing 15% or more of her ideal body weight.
Continues to diet or restrict foods even though she is not overweight.
Has a distorted body imageâfeels fat even when she is thin.


Is preoccupied with food, calories, nutrition, or cooking.

Denies that she is hungry.

Exercises obsessively.

Weighs herself frequently.

Complains about feeling bloated or nauseated even when she eats normalâor less than normalâamounts of food.

Loses her hair or begins to experience thinning hair.

Feels cold even though the temperature is normal or only slightly cool.

Stops menstruating.
Bulimia: Here are some of the common warning signs that a person may be suffering from bulimia. The person:


Engages in binge eating and cannot voluntarily stop.

Uses the bathroom frequently after meals.

Reacts to emotional stress by overeating.

Has menstrual irregularities.

Has swollen facial glands, giving her chipmunk cheeks.

Experiences frequent fluctuations in weight.

Cannot voluntarily stop eating.

Is obsessively concerned about weight.

Attempts to adhere to diets, but generally fails.

Feels guilty or ashamed about eating.

Feels out of control.

Has depressive moods.
Compulsive Overeating: People with compulsive eating disorder feel unable to stop eating, eat very fast, eat when they're not hungry, eat only when alone, or eat nearly non-stop throughout the day. Compulsive eaters often over-indulge in sugary foods and use them in an attempt to elevate their mood. When they don't eat the foods they crave, they often experience severe withdrawal symptoms.

Eats large amounts of food when not physically hungry.

Eats much more rapidly than normal.

Eats until the point of feeling uncomfortably full.

Why don't the new psychology books list binge eating disorder or compulsive overeating disorder in them?
Q. I was disappointed that my psychology book, published last year, didn't mention COE/BED. Instead it stuck with the stereotypical anorexia/bulimia route and had the classic picture of some emaciated girl pushing food away. Why is this? I mean, the two disorders I listed are gaining more and more credibility, yet they're not being included in the "About Eating Disorders" section of textbooks.

A. Just have the wrong text! I am using a new one this year for my classes, both are including, along with alot of other things considered "controversial". I change text books yearly. This one actually has a publication date of 2009, but is out now. You can add to your info base: apa.org lots of info there ...has its own search engine for the latest research. How does binge drinking effect the heart?
Q. I had 2 heart attacks 2yrs ago my refractions 20% I have high cholestrol & I was doing good until 2 months ago been eating bad,binged4 times about 12-14 beers each time what will this do.

A. The worst part of a binge for your heart is the next day. Sometimes referred to as 'holiday heart,' these are cardiac events associated with binge drinking and hangovers. As your body processes the alcohol, it dehydrates your body, can raise your blood pressure and speed your pulse which can trigger arrythmias and other cardiac problems. It is NOT good for your heart. Alcohol is only good for the heart if you're drinking wine generally and only in small doses of moderation. Steer clear of binges. If you want to google 'holiday heart' you'll probably find more info on how binges affect your heart the next day.
