Q. I'm a 26 year old male and I have been binge drinking on weekends for years. If anyone knows what damage it can cause and can tell me ways to repair I'd appreciate it
A. I cannot answer your question because I really donât want to know the answer.
I do not binge drink on weekends but I drink (alcohol) every day and I heard itâs as bad, maybe even worse because youâre never really drunk or pass out but you only do not drink alcohol when you have to drive (hopefully).
It changes your brain chemistry so even trying to stop cold turkey could be very dangerous without the help of meds.
Just quitting a nicotine addiction cold turkey sends you to Hell and back for a few weeks and getting insomnia, digestive issues, respiratory distress, weight gain and countless other symptoms but is not life threatening. But quitting an alcohol addiction can be life threatening as itâs about your brain chemistry. I donât even want to think about it.
Youâre still young, in your 20s.
Binge drinkers often stop drinking in their 40s or 50s because their body cannot handle it anymore (ask Bill Maher or Craig Ferguson).
If you would stop now, I think you should be fine as youâre still young enough to handle the stress of quitting and did it for only a few years (if you live in the US and respect the law).
When you wake up on the floor and you have no idea where you are or what time or day it is and you have a huge headacheâ¦you start to get the message that you should stop doing that, and might have to ask for help if you cannot stop by yourself.
My brother is a recovering alcoholic, meaning that he cannot drink any alcohol or even the taste of it, like when youâre cooking with alcohol, the alcohol (the alcohol sugarsâ¦ethanol) evaporates during cooking but the flavors remain but he still cannot be exposed to the temptation of my rum/raisin birthday cake (the raisins soaked in rum to no sink at the bottom or the cake) or my chicken recipe with a cherry sauce or my onion soup when I use white wine or he cannot eat a bowl of mussels (I cook them in white wine and a shallots/fresh parsley/thyme sauce) or my Beef Burgundy (Iâm using Burgundy red wine).
He comes to my house and I have to put all my beer, wine and liquors in boxes for my friends to store at their house.
That used to piss off my ex-husband who liked a Tbsp of liquor in his ice-cream (he was from Bourgogne too).
And still, once I noticed (it smells pretty strong too) he was impaired so I took a sip of his glass of coke and he confessed to me that he was using a bike in my garage to go to the liquor store to get whiskey and then pretends he was drinking coca-cola when he was really drinking Jack and Coke (Jack Danielâs whiskey + Coca-Cola).
My uncle was a drunk too, in France, where the motto is âboire ou conduire, il faut choisirâ which means âto drink (alcohol) or to drive, you have to chooseâ.
Then my uncle was proud to have made his choice which was to drink so he could not drive. So he used a bicycle to go to work (great to stay in shape) or public transportation (great if you live in a place with great public transportation, surely not where I live now in South Carolina in the US with practically non-existent public transportationâ¦even 15yo need a car to go places and the government actually give them a license).
Now, about the damages caused by drinking alcoholâ¦as I said youâre only in your 20s and might get off with a warning, lucky you but still do not delay.
Youâll probably have some nasty side effects from withdrawal for a few weeks (if you get the motivation to quit now) but nothing your young body could not handle if youâre overall healthy (like you eat healthy and youâre physically active and not have other medical issues).
Damages in your 40s and 50s include loss of balance (you need to rely on a cane or walk very slowly to not suddenly careen forward and break your front teeth on some corner table) and probably some internal organs damages (liver, pancreasâ¦). You also get issues with the connection between your nerves and your muscles because your brain is messed up. If you run your finger nails on your calves and you cannot feel itâ¦yep, you have some missing connection nerves to your brain. Then you get weird uncontrollable trembling, especially in your hands and joints (wrists, elbows, shouldersâ¦).
My brother, whoâs a recovering alcoholic for years, still has trembling hands, which make it hard for him to hold his cigarettes.
He could give up his alcohol addiction but not his nicotine addiction.

How do I avoid eating foods that I have strong cravings for?
Q. I avoid bad foods for 4 days a week, monday, tuesday, wednesday and thursday, but friday and the weekend are days when my body decides to binge on food. How do I stop this!
A. A friend of mine kept pictures of Sharon Stone on refrigerator door and the cabinet doors where she kept her food. Underneath the photos was a warning, 'Stay away and look like this.' Next to the photos of Ms. Stone she had a pictures of Kristie Alley. Underneath those photos a warning read: 'Go ahead, eat and up like this!' I've known people who have done this and swear that it works. I tried it myself, those warnings make you think! Keep snacks like carrot and celery sticks available and good luck!
How can I stop binging on the weekends?
Q. I've been eating healthy for a few months and have lost 14 pounds, and I still have to lose quite a few pounds to get to goal weight. I do good all week with my diet and I allow myself one cheat meal a week, but lately during the weekends I binge like everyday. I try to stop myself but it's so hard lol. any tips to help myself stop? thanks :)
A. Ive been there.
Change your cheat day to a day in the middle of the week.
On Weekends just make sure your stocked with healthy foods, and just control yourself.
I tell myself it will taste better tomorrow, and then eventually i dont want/crave it anymore.
You will eventually become junk food free and not even want it anymore. Now given the option,i'd choose an apple over cake anytime.
