What is the difference between an Anorexic individual and the average Western woman?
Q. I've struggled with Anorexia Nervosa for several years, and during this time, I've been struck by just how common eating disordered thoughts and behaviours are in our society. It seems that everywhere you turn, you see young girls picking at salads whilst complaining of how 'fat' they are, and boasting to their friends about how little they eat. You see life-long yoyo dieters, and exercise addicts, and 'health-freaks' who are so convinced of the evils of sugar that they believe that so much as touching a granule of the stuff will make it instantly transfer to their thighs. We are, undoubtedly, obsessed with weight loss. Which makes me wonder - just what exactly is the difference between me and the typical insecure teenage girl? Is it genetics? Is it simply some glitch in my brain that renders me capable of "successfully" denying myself food, while everyone else fails? Or is it simply insanity? It's always stopped me from taking my diagnosis seriously; a part of me doesn't feel that I'm 'sick', or worthy of any special attention, because everyone is starving themselves.
A. Of course they're common. Have you seen the media? When was the last time you saw a healthy lovely woman who isn't skinny but it successful, on billboards, advertising, acting, famous for something? They're out there...there are PLENTY out there. But the ones that get the most press are the artificial ones, the extremely skinny ones. It's inferred that if you don't look like this, you won't get work, you won't get anywhere. It's a lie and the majority of us know it but when you are depressed, you don't like your looks, you have low to no self esteem...you'll buy into all this.
The difference is...you make a choice to not eat consistently, over-exercise, and whatever else you did. You kept doing it until you were so weak that you couldn't do anything at all. I don't know how bad it got for you...if you got to the point of being skeletal, needing a feeding tube because you refused or were unable to eat, etc. At some point, it got bad enough for you to go to a doctor and get help and treatment. You have a disease...a disorder.
Self esteem comes and goes. Most kids go through phases where they want to look like everyone else...the skinnier the better and whatever else. But they don't go so far as to binge and purge or starve themselves. They might try or only do it in front of others but it never gets to the point where they can't stop. Anorexia and bulimia and all the other eating disorders get to the point where the person can't stop what they are doing.
Talk to your doctor and support about this.
No, it's not insanity.
No, not everyone is starving themselves. The way you see things...the fact you believe that everyone else is doing what you're doing, is part of the eating disorder.

How to Arrest Unquenching Appetite so that One gets Liberation from Unhealthy Hunger?
Q. My husband suffers from frequent bouts of hunger which troubles me a lot. I seek ways of freeing him from this hunger-disease at the earliest.
A. One seems to love to eat and seem not to have any control over it. This leads to the conclusion that if one is going to lose weight oneâs body has to think it is not hungry. One is not trying to starve oneâs self, just loosing a few vanity pounds but one is always hungry! Anyone may suggest on how not to feel so hungry all the time and here are some suggestions.
Drink water! One way to help is to drink 8 glasses of water everyday (but not all at once)
When you eat, eat very slowly ( eating slowly makes you full faster ). Drinking water often fools the body into thinking it's eaten, so it'll stop the food craving until you are actually hungry. Drink lots of water and eat small frequent healthy meals and snacks throughout the day (it's called grazing). Avoid white bread!!
Try not to focus on how your body looks, but on how it WORKS. When you can run and dance and do whatever without much effort, then your body will look great, too. You can eat a lot- it's just WHAT you eat that counts, and get plenty of exercise and drink water and take vitamins. You also need to do at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise a day. Your metabolism gets higher through frequent meals and exercise.
Eat something that is VERY high in fiber... like grape-nuts. It will take longer to digest and so you will feel fuller longer. Seriously, please make sure you are eating enough to begin with or your body will drive you nuts with cravings. Well you can do what you like to do.... eat! When you are hungry, you just eat something healthy that does not add many calories. That may usually be the famous salad. Salad contains all sorts of healthy vegetables. With a little low fat/low cal dressing, it's delicious.
You can start juicing. Try a banana and milk smoothie once a day. A juice fast is good. Some people do 3 days of juice fasting followed by 3 days of fruits and vegetables. You add nuts to that. Eat fruits, vegetables and nuts for 3 days. Use steamed vegetables and lots of them.
You should be mindful of what you eat. I think it means plan on what type of food you want and should be eating. Ask yourself what will I eat now and will I eat later. And of course make it good food, stuff from the "food groups", yeah? Fake food is prepared in a way and has ingredients that your body has a more difficult time digesting and distributing to the rest of your body that uses it for energy and growing and functioning. Really try and minimize most of the crap food out of your diet, as much as possible, will power.
Otherwise, celery has negative calories. It takes more energy to eat and digest it, than it contains! Try snacking on celery sticks. Add other raw fruits and vegetables too for variety. (Raw food takes more energy to digest than cooked.)
Eat lots of complex carbohydrates. Theyâll keep your blood sugar level constant and eliminate hunger pangs. If your tummy feels empty snack on low cal high fiber foods like carrots, lettuce etc. eat fruit if you need energy boost and drink lots of tea and water.
Here are some more suggestions: -
1) If you are working out, you are going to get hungry. Don't panic, that's part of the process.
2) Try to eat foods that contain protein and some fat. Try to choose healthy dietary fat such as nuts, avocadoes, etc. Saturated and trans-fat sources such as fries, chips, full-fat dairy / meat, cookies, etc are not heart healthy.
3) Eat 6 - 8 times a day. I prefer to graze throughout the day. It keeps your metabolism going. I am also the one at work with piles of food on their desk and who eats all day long, but never gets fat.
4) Avoid refined sugars, white rice and other fast-digesting starches. They are digested quickly and leave you hungry.
5) Track your calories for a few days and see where you stand. You may be inadvertently starving yourself and thus making yourself susceptible to binge eating.
Look I seriously recommend this diet since starving yourself isn't part of the plan.
You do questionnaire that tells you your body type and then follow the suggested menus and eating schedule for your body type.
