How to tell my mom I think I have a binge eating problem?
Q. My mom has lost a lot of weight and I asked her how, she said to track everything. I have tried it but I always do good the first week or two then fall back into my old patterns or I just think to myself you can exercise later and I never do...maybe sometimes but its just like running a mile. I tried to tell her that I have binge eating and she thought I was overreacting! She was like do you want me to really help you but she doesn't get that I don't eat a lot in front of her and that's one of the symptoms! I don't know what to do I'm sick of being overweight but I can't stop!!

A. Hi,

Firstly, stop beating yourself up about this. It's not your fault. It's horrible, and you feel helpless right now I know, but there are ways to get better. You've done something so brave in trying to tell your mom. Telling the people you care about when you have a problem like binge eating, is the hardest part of dealing with it. If you are well in the habit of binge eating, it feels shameful, embarrassing, silly, overwhelming...I know it does. But don't panic, that is only likely to make it worse!! It can be a long process trying to figure out why exactly you overeat, but you have to be patient and take it a day at a time.

Personally, I've been through therapy for the disorder, but I know this isn't something you might be able to afford or even get access to. What you can do, is look around on the internet for recovery blogs and articles with tips and tools that will help. You could even start a blog yourself, even if it' just getting your feelings and frustration out on paper. It might at least make you feel better.

I write a blog which tries to explains the steps I've been through in fixing the problem for those that can't for any reason undergo therapy. You're welcome to check it out at http://www.findyourfix.blogspot.com/
Alternatively, you might be able to find a local support group here: http://www.oa.org/
It might be difficult to arrange going to a meeting if your mom isn't fully understanding of your problem, but hopefully you can work out a way around that. Sincerely, I hope that you can work your way through this, it's a nasty place to be. Eventually, I'm sure you'll work out a way to help your mom understand a little better.

If you need any more advice, you can contact me through the blog. I'd be happy to try and help.
Peace and love x
