How long can someone starve themselves before they are at risk of dying?
Q. Like I wanna try one of those starvation diets to loose weight but how long can a person go without eating before their health could be seriously affected and they risk something like dying or something? I am just trying to loose some weight here. I am 23 if that helps any.

A. Please don't you will be sorry it actually makes you gain weight. Once you stop the starve your body will then store anything extra as fat to be used if you starve again. Your body doesn't realize it's only going to starve to lose weight.

It's well known that in order to lose weight, you must create a calorie deficit: burn more calories than the number you consume. If this is indeed the case than what could be simpler than to simply cut down the calories you consume to nearly nothing? This seems like an easy and logical way to create a massive calorie deficit that should lead to losing weight, right?

Wrong!

Starving yourself to lose weight is the absolute wrong thing you should do in order to achieve a long term weight loss. In fact, you may be jeopardizing your health and making it very difficult for yourself to shed weight and keep it off for years to come.

Why starving yourself to lose weight doesn't work?

Well, there are a number of reasons:

1. Psychological - Have ever tried going without food for more than 1-2 days, or even going on very little of it? It's not fun. In fact, it can quickly become very depressing. This is just what you don't want to happen when you're trying to lose weight. You want to remain motivated so you'll be able to stick to your diet plan for the long run. Starving yourself will make this very difficult.

2. Disrupting your health - Just like a car can't run without fuel, your body can't run without food. This is your fuel, what you need to put into your body in order for it to run properly. You may be risking your health if you're trying to starve yourself. You may experience tiredness, lack of energy, loss of muscle, hair loss. And if you continue to deprive yourself of food for a long time you may cause serious internal damage on yourself. Trust me, this is risky.

3. In terms of weight loss, starving yourself can be counterproductive. The reason is that when you cut down your calorie intake too low, your body goes into starvation mode. It slows down your metabolism to reduce the rate in which you burn calories. This is done to preserve whatever calorie stores your body has. It's trying to make sure you'll be able to survive without food for as long as possible. It's a survival mechanism.

When your metabolism slows down, your body loses weight more and more slowly until you just can't lose weight anymore because you're burning so few calories. In addition, when you start eating normally again, your metabolism is so slow that you start gaining the weight back!

I hope that I've convinced you not to go on a starvation diet. It's not a smart way to try to lose weight.
