Can a woman with an eating disorder carry a baby to full term?
Q. My friend is 26 and pregnant with her first child.

She has been battling anorexia and bullimia for years.

She is about normal weight and height right now and is 5 months pregnant.

She told me that she eats about 1200 calories a day on average.

She said about once a week she binges and then purges.

She is going to a therapist and her doctor is aware of her eating disorder.

Can she carry this baby full term?

Will the baby be okay?

Do you know anyone who had a eating disorder that had a baby?

A. right before I got pregnant I had anorexia and bulimia. Althought I was way underweight and very sick looking when I got pregnant. My motivation was for that unborn child. I ate what I could and althought I was extremely sick the entire pregnancy I carried my child close to full term. I had him a 34 1/2 weeks which was somewhat premature but he was perfectly fine. He was 5 lbs. But he was healthy. What i should say is that child should be her motivation to try as she might to not throw up intentionally. Your going to gain weight during pregnancy. and she will lose it once its all over. I am currently back down to my healthy weight for my height and I am perfectly fine with that. She needs to think of that child, before she runs into the bathroom after she eats.

But to answer your question ... she may have complications along the way but she should be able to carry the child to full term or around there. But seriously help her get herself under control!!!

What is the best way to keep yourself motivated to exercise and lose weight?
Q. It is not my New Year's Resolution. It seems as though so many people make that resolution then fail. That scares me! I just spent a lot of money on a gym membership and time with a trainer and I really really want to lose weight and feel good. How do I keep myself from binge, compulsive and emotional eating?

A. Well the MOST important thing to remember is that you cannot get RID of a habit, that rarely works. You need to replace a bad habit with a good one. It also takes at least 2 months to firmly ingrain a new habit.

You need to clean out your kitchen. Throw out all the garbage food, chips, dips, candies etc. GET IT OUT of the house. Do not buy anymore. Do not let the kids talk you into buying more. Explain to them that the one thing in life that really MATTERS is your health, because without your health, life is hard, if not impossible, to enjoy.

Remember that everyday you quit and go back to crappy eating habits is another day that you are punishing yourself and holding yourself back from a happier, free life.

Go to the gym even when you don't want to! It never fails, once you get there you will enjoy yourself. 90% of the battle is getting there! Stick with it, and don't let people in your life get you off track...People often want fat people to stay fat. "Come on, lets have pizza tonight, it won't hurt just once!" "Have that ice cream, you can work it off tomorrow" Remember that you are building NEW habits for a better life and a better future for both you AND your children. Children learn by example, do you want them to suffer health problems later in life because you didn't teach them proper eating habits? No, of course you don't. So remember that this isn't only about you, but your childrens future! When you get the urge to eat, get out of the house, walk, hit the gym...eventually you'll replace food with healthier options.

You can do it, but only if you realize that you are worth it.
