Q. I am trying to lose weight before school, but i don't have the time to do any extra exercising. Currently i am on the Atkins diet (all meat and protein). Its okay. I haven't gained weight. But i'm not losing at a pace that will reach my goal before school. Are there any other effective diets out there besides fasting?
A. Atkins is a smart diet choice. You only consume the most 20 carbs a day. if i include to many carbs in my meals, I gain weight. Fasting like you said is not an option so how about including more veggies and fruits in your diet plan. Really, all diets fail, you have to sometimes include a small sugar treat or salty food to shock your system. If you do ever have a binge day, consume all your carbs and calories in a 1 hour period. The reason? Because you fool your body of the amount of insulin taken into your system. So don't eat a piece of chocolate cake at 2 p.m. then some pretzels at 5 p.m. Just IF you do go off you're diet, eat all the junk food in a 1 hour period. Also, dancing around you're room, typing questions on here all burn calories. Just sitting and resting burns calories as well. So small things make a big difference :)

A. The quickest way I believe is going to be The Atkins diet combined with a light excercise routine (walk for 30 minutes 3-4 times before the 18th). A lot of people that have strong opinions about this diet usually know little or nothing about it at all. This diet acts as a natural diuretic and appetite suppressant. It generally benefits people who are big meat eaters and who don't like calorie or fat gram restrictive diets (men!!). I have been on and off this diet for over 5 years now (I am a female) and have had my 16 year old nephew on it for the past year and a half. He was extremely obese at 317 pounds. He is down to 215 pounds and that's with NO exercise at all. This diet is not for the faint of heart. It takes EXTREME willpower to stay on this diet. You don't realize how much of a carb addict you are until you try to wean yourself off of them. The induction phase of the diet lasts two weeks and it is usually during this phase that dramatic weight loss can occur. If you are considering this diet you should read up on it first or buy one of Atkin's books so that you better understand how the diet works. You will also need a good vitamin supplement and Ketostix. The Ketostix are an indicator of whether your body is in moderate to heavy fat burning mode. And although I do mention that my nephew lost 102 pounds in the year and a half he's been on the diet without excercise, I believe that exercise should be a part of your life routine regardless of what you eat on a daily basis. And no, I do not work for the Atkins company. I am only speaking from my personal experience and the experiences of family and friends around me. Good luck with the weight loss!!
How to get over diet cravings?
Q. I just started my diet 2-3 days ago and I'm already craving my favorite junk food. Not the greatest start. I was sooo close to binge on a couple of pizzas, instead I made a 4-egg omelet. . I'm a 330lb guy and I can tell this is going to be pretty hard. What are some things that can ease this process of withdrawl?
A. An omelet is a great choice! Add pizza toppings if you want - pepperoni, onions, mushrooms, lots of cheese. I prefer grilled onions & poblano peppers with bacon & cheese.
I'm hoping you are doing a low carb program & not a low calorie diet. No one gets to this weight unless their body can no longer process carbs & carbs trigger cravings for more carbs.
The first 3 days are the worst if you are doing a low carb plan, hang in there. I always recommend planning to overeat low carb foods until the body finds it's natural balance.
Simple carbs are addictive & can be disastrous to health. The best way to break the addiction is NO carbs for 3 days. Make a batch of deviled eggs, eat one every time you want "something" - have huge omelets with bacon, sausage, peppers, mushrooms & cheese. Meats smothered with peppers, mushrooms & cheese - pork rinds & dip or tuna/chicken/egg salad - sugar free cheese cake. Eat so much you won't feel deprived of anything. By the 4th day, the addiction will be gone & the low carb way of eating will create a natural appetite suppression that makes it much easier to make healthy choices.
Unfortunately, anyone who accumulates over 30# of excess fat is more than likely insulin resistant. Long term ingestion of highly refined carbs "burn out" the insulin receptors on muscle cells, so calories go directly to fat cells, leaving muscle cells screaming for nutrition. Exercise forces muscles to accept glucose out of the bloodstream without the need for insulin.
Most people get obese because their bodies just can't process carbs any more. They become insulin resistant & carbs go straight to fat cells. As healthy as fruit may be, it just doesn't promote fat loss. The body won't release fat stores until the blood stream is free of insulin. In someone insulin resistant, the insulin response is too sensitive & produces too much insulin.
You can lose more body fat eating protein & fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast, eat all you want, but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter & half an avocado a day (for added potassium). Keep the calories high & the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.
The first 2 weeks eat several cups a day of (mostly) lettuce & celery, cucumbers, radishes, mushrooms, peppers & more variety of vegetables thereafter - add 5 grams per day additional every week (20 grams day first 2 weeks, 25grams 3rd week, 30grams 4th week etc) til you gain weight, then subtract 10grams. That will be your personal carb level (everyone is different & depends on how active you are.)
Start with meat, fats & salads for 2 weeks and then slowly add in more green veg, wk4 fresh cheeses, wk5 nuts & seeds, wk6 berries, wk7 legumes, wk8 other fruits, wk9 starchy veg, wk10 whole grains. You will learn how your body reacts to different foods.
The body won't release fat stores if you lower calories below what it needs. It will slow metabolism to compensate & store every spare ounce as fat. If you continue lowering calories, it will continue lowering the set point, til it can survive off nothing & store fat on anything. The body will only release it's fat stores if it knows there is plenty of nutritious food.
The core of Atkins program is converting the body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). Dietary fat levels need to be at >65% of total calories, if not, the body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).
It takes minimum of 3 days to convert a body to ketosis, (but only one bite to convert back to glycolysis). People feel sluggish the first week but most feel better than ever thereafter.
High insulin levels unbalance other hormones. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean muscle will be gained even without exercise.
Ground flax seed (4 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 min. for daily fiber needs.
As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control & shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories because insulin, the fat storage hormone is not activated. Many people gain weight on high carb, do low carb to lose weight & then are shocked when they return to high carb & gain weight.
