A. I'm not bulimic, but I'm anorexic and now in recovery, but not recoverd. I was hospitalized because of medical problems and forced to gain a lot of weight (don't worry, though if you have a normal BMI, you won't be forced to gain weight), and when I was released from the hospital, I was sent to an afterschool treatment program. At the treatment program, I met with a nutritionist and doctor, had a supervised dinner, and went to group therapy sessions, family group therapy and art and music therapy. After about a month of this, I went into outpatient care and I now meet with a nutritionist, doctor and psychologist once per week.
When you go to your doctor, he or she should be very understanding and try to get you all the help you need. Your health will be first priority, so the doctor may want to send you to get bloodwork done as well as an EKG to check that your heart is normal. You will also have your blood pressure and heart rate taken and you will be weighed. Then your doctor will talk to you about treatment options and if you think outpatient care will be sufficient. He or she will give you a recommendation to a nutritionist and psychologist. When you bring up your depression, your doctor will talk to you a little bit about how you've been feeling over the past several months, and will recommend a psychiatrist who can perscribe you medication.
The nutritionist will help you to establish a balanced meal plan that will prevent binging and purging, will talk to you about strategies to help you regain normal eating habits, and will be able to answer any questions you have about nutrition. You may also be weighed at the nutritionist's office to make sure that your weight remains healthy.
The psychologist will help you to understand the reasons why you developed your eating disorder, healthier methods of coping and will let you talk confidentially about anything you need to.
I hope that this has helped you, and good luck with your recovery.

I'm worried my anorexia is turning into a binge eating disorder?
Q. I was diagnosed with anorexia about two months back, however I have not had it very long. I started out in August at 195 pounds (I'm 5'9 tall with a large bone frame) and by the end of November I was 135. Throughout December I started binge eating and fasting every other day. I also started purging frequently. I ended up maintaining my weight all month.
Now it is January and I am trying my best to recover but I can't stop binging. I sometimes purge after but I can't always. Here is an idea of my intake today...
-Bowl of special k cereal with soy milk
-Two rice cakes
-Rice bowl with brown rice/tofu/corn/mushrooms/teriyaki
-Chocolate banana protein smoothie
..........then the binge starts........
-TWO pints of Arctic Zero ice cream
-Six macademia nut cookies
-Cheesy pesto grilled sandwich
-Veggie sandwich with mozzarella, artichoke, zuchinni
-Large cup of hummus
-Ritz crackers
-Soy vanilla chai tea
-Mocha smoothie
I purged a few times between all that, but not nearly enough came up to account for it. Is this normal with recovery since I have only been recovering for three days now (I was eating about 100-300 calories a day for a couple weeks prior). Or is this turning into a binge disorder? I literally just used pretty much all my meal points for the week on binge food and I have been spending so much money on it. I am planning on restricting again tomorrow and all week but I am so scared :(

A. I think the best advice is to get some help. Anorexia often turns into bulimia, and although the physical symptoms alter, the psychological causes are the same. Unhealthy thinking regarding self-esteem is causing you to look to food for control, comfort, safety....something that you aren't getting otherwise.
If you restrict tomorrow to make up for any weight-gain from your binge....that's not really going to solve the actual problem, right? You'll likely binge again in a day or a week. Binging is just a symptom of the problem. So get in contact with a counselor of some sort in your local area that specializes with eating disorders, and consider contacting a dietician that can help you better understand what your body needs.
Best wishes in your recovery!

A. If you starve yourself, of course your body is going to demand and crave more food. It needs that food to survive, or else you can get fatally ill. 100-300 calories a day is so dangerous D: eat at least 900 cal a day and you'll find you won't want to binge as much. If you starve yourself then binge then starve again, your body will go into survival mode and store everything it can as fat, so you'll actually just gain weight. Eat a healthy amount and exercise. No one can look the same because we all have different genetic make up. Love yourself for who you are <3
