Q. I just started exercising and dieting. I know I'm doing really well on it, all I've eaten is oatmeal, carrots, 2 bananas and some broccoli. Even as I was eating the broccoli I just felt so gross. I know it's unreasonable to feel guilty about eating broccoli but when I'm on a diet I stress over every little thing and when I'm not on a diet I eat like a monster and feel no guilt at all.
A. I've been in this situation myself. It took many years for me to discover how to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. In her book, "Rethinking Thin" Gina Kolata explains why popular diets fail for the vast majority of people over the long term.
I learned that I had to think of my eating patterns as a permanent change to my way of living. Today, I prepare raw, steamed, and cooked legumes, whole grains, leafy greens, colorful vegetables, fruits, nuts, and ground flax seed in correct proportions. I put my entire meal for the day in a large disposable food grade box that I can take with me. I can only eat what's in the box with no exceptions. I know that I have prepared correct and very healthy portions of each type of food and I can prepare two boxes at a time without much effort. I prepare green smoothies most days, and otherwise, I drink well water and pure water.
I no longer eat snack food or binge on healthy foods. I lost 90 pounds without too much effort. I know you can do this if you like. I'm very satisfied, never hungry, and feel invigorated. I'm healthier than I've ever been based upon my blood work.
Give it a try and see if this works for you.

Is it possible to diet low carb and vegan at the same time?
Q. I have discovered dairy leads to acne, for me. No doubt about it. Now that I have eliminated dairy, I feel why not meat, and go for vegan? But then I have wound up eating too much rice and cereal. I already need to lose weight. How can a vegan diet help me to lose weight and not crave food?
A. Yes but it's not easy. There's always tofu, edamame, tempeh, nuts and seeds, soy isolate protein shakes. I'm also vegan and binge sometimes when I try to go low carb. I noticed that if I don't eat wheat products (really hard!!! for me bagels = evil) and only eat oatmeal and brown/whole grain rice, then I don't binge. If you're not already eating 7-9 servings of fruits and veggies a day, upping your intake may help make you full and same with the protein so you won't be craving grains as much. It's not easy but if you hang in there it will be worth it! :)
If you hav had and got help for an Eating disorder can you help me?

Oh if it matters I am bulimic.

A. I had both anorexia and bulimia and I found that an underlying issue I had was a need to please others, a need for control and an insecurity about myself. The battle with anorexia got very dangerous for me, and I had to decide one day that I was going to eat so I could live. Since you are struggling with bulimia, which I dealt with for over a year, I will talk about that.
It was a hard one to overcome because you get so used to the cycle and it just repeats over and over. You have to put a stop to it. One time, when you have eaten alot, just make the decision to not bring it back up. You'll have to "own" that you have eaten that amount, and realize that the discomfort will eventually go away and you will get hungry again eventually. You will feel very uncomfortable, but that is how I taught myself to stop the binge/purge cycle and eat "normally" again. If you stop mid-cycle (after the binge), you'll realize that the feeling you get is not worth bingeing at all, and you can stop doing it altogether.
You won't be perfect at recovery, so don't expect yourself to be perfect. But you will eventually recover. Forgive yourself if you slip up, but know that you have the power to put a stop to it. Take it one day at a time and don't hesitate to seek help from a counselor, nutritionist, loved one.
Best wishes & take care.
