Binge eating before period even on ADHD medicine?

Q. ok I take vyvanse for my ADHD. on thing I like about it is that it reduces my appetite. Except when I am PMSing before I start my period. Even when I take my medicine and its in my system. I eat until there is no tomorrow. Usually one of the side affects of stimulant medication is loss of appetite. I try to always eat healthily and I manage fine until 2 weeks before my period. I absolutely BINGE? Is this normal?

A. It is normal to binge eat especially before your period. When I was younger, boy did I binge eat. I think there was a deeper problem there for me. I worked on my insecurities through a lot of different methods, counseling, classes, seminars, yoga, meditation, behavior modification, you name it. I have come a long way and now am relatively binge free.

Butterflies in my stomach?
Q. I was just wondering if butterflies 'fluttering sensation' in your stomach could be bad at all. I started taking Vyvanse (ADHD medication) and i started sleeping and eating less. Which is actually good, because i have a binge eating disorder and used to sleep in till 3. I know butterflies mean your nervous or excited, but i know that i am not. Thanks.

A. You also get 'butterflies' from being hyper and not being able to vent your energy, especially since you went from: Sleep less & Eating more -> Sleep more & Eating less.

ADHD medication cutting off my appetite?
Q. So I take it at 6 am and I'm not hungry and I don't eat till 4-5 pm. And I don't eat regularly sometimes I binge for like an hour. So I've lost 30 pounds a bout 4 years ago, now I weigh 130 which isn't unhealthy but I have a gut. And it really makes me self-conscious. What do I do to stop this starving all day-binge at night routine and regulate my body fat? I still have school lunch so 5 small meals a day isn't really an option. Help?

A. Listen,

I'm 23 years old and a fellow ADHD sufferer who knows exactly what you are going through. You're probably on Vyvanse or Adderall like myself, which inherently ameliorate your appetite due to being amphetamines.

What you should do throughout the day while you are on the medication and cannot get anything down your throat is stock yourself up with Ensure's and take a few to school. These are meal replacement drinks with vitamins and nutrients your body need to stay healthy. Moreover, when you don't need to feel 'stimulated' anymore to study, get vitamin C in your body which will wear your medication out faster for the day so you can eat a little more at night.

If you take the medication everyday, you start to build a tolerance to it and you'll have to keep upping your dose, which will kill your appetite even more. So, take at least 2 days off per week to eat and let your body recover.
